8 - Today’s COMMITMENT Gives Me Tenacity

This next chapter discusses Commitment. As in every chapter, Maxwell opens with a story, and then moves on to ask a couple of questions to ask ourselves. He asks us, “What were you born to do? What do you think you future holds? Do you believe you have a purpose or destiny? If so, will you fulfil it? To become the person you have potential to be, you will need great tenacity. That quality comes from commitment.”

Maxwell then points out why commitment matters today:

  1. Commitment can change your life.

  2. Commitment helps you overcome many of life’s obstacles.

  3. Your commitment will be tested every day.

He then asks us to make the decision to make and keep proper commitments daily:

  1. Count the cost.

  2. Determine to pay the price.

  3. Always strive for excellence.

Closing this chapter out, Maxwell asks us to continue to manage the discipline of commitment:

  1. Expect commitment to be a daily struggle.

  2. Don’t rely on talent alone.

  3. Focus on choices, not conditions.

  4. Be single-minded.

  5. Do what’s right even when you don’t feel like it.

Commitment is one of the hardest to maintain in our lives, and Maxwell leaves us with a great quote from Arthur Gordon that reiterates this: “Nothing is easier than saying words. Nothing is harder than living them, day after day.”
